Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus

_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

Single work: Arabic. Date:

⟨10⟩98/1686-7 (76v).

unknown; unknown scribe.

bought on 10 June 1922 of J. B. Yahuda (note of acquisition, Iav; stamp, 76v), probably Isaac Benjamin Shlomo Ezekiel Yahuda, a bookseller in Cairo (cf. Kropf).

western paper (regular chain lines visible), I+76+Ia ff. (foliated with Arabic-European numerals in pencil; a previous foliation with Hindu-Arabic numerals starting from 131 suggests that this was originally part of a larger codex; additional Hindu-Arabic numerals in the tables of contents on 1v, 22r, 39v, 63v, apparently by the rubricator and corresponding to a now invisible numbering of bifolia; catchwords in the scribe’s hand). A single very clear naskh hand in black; chapter titles and paragraph beginnings rubricated, beginnings of glosses by Thābit ibn Qurra with red overlines; almost fully dotted ductus, occasional tanwīn and final hamzas, maddas mostly indicated, few shaddas, frequent use of lām-alif muḥaqqaqa. No tables or diagrams; mostly undotted abjad notation, rubricated in the main text. Dimensions not provided; 23 lines per page (misṭara imprints). Some minor ink smudges, not affecting the readability; lower part of f. 72 repaired, otherwise very good condition. Çaharkuşe binding decorated with a golden frame and hatip ebru paper, doublures in yellow tinted paper. Mistaken attribution on the spine by the British Museum: ‘Thabit ibn Kurrah. Arbaʿ maqālāt’ (in gold). Type II binding.

astrology. — Index: Ptolemaica (1v-76r).
