Postdoc position (Arabist) starting in January 2019

A post-doctoral position (3-5 years) for an Arabist
for preparing a critical edition of Ptolemy’s Almagest

 

The Project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus (PAL) is dedicated to the edition and study of the Arabic and Latin versions of Ptolemy’s astronomical and astrological works and related material. These include works by Ptolemy or attributed to him, commentaries thereupon and other texts that are of immediate relevance to understanding Ptolemy’s heritage in the Middle Ages and the early modern period up to 1700 A.D.

 The Project is hosted by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich for a period of 25 years from 2013 to 2037. It is supervised by Prof. Dr. Dag Nikolaus Hasse (University of Würzburg) and carried out by five scholars, namely two research leaders, Dr. David Juste and Dr. Benno van Dalen, two post-doctoral researchers and one doctoral student.

Studentische Hilfskraft opportunity (from May 2018 onwards)

The Academy project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus is seeking to appoint a part-time Studentische Hilfskraft (c. 10 hours/week).

The Hilfskraft will be responsible for:

Studentische or wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte with advanced knowledge of Arabic

The 25-year project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the University of Würzburg appoints on a regular basis up to three or four studentische or wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte who are paid the regular fees for Hilfskräfte (up to 40 hours per month).

Current vacancy

Starting on 1 October 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter, we are looking to appoint one or two Hilfskräfte for 20 to 40 hours per month with a good knowledge of Arabic. These Hilfskräfte will work in particular with our post-doctoral researcher Dr. José Bellver in order to collect manuscript catalogues of libraries around the world and to inspect these catalogues for manuscripts containing works by or related to Ptolemy (cf. the first four tasks above). Advanced reading skills of Arabic are therefore absolutely essential.

We intend to have a first round of interviews with suitable candidates in late August / early September, but will accept further applications until the position(s) have been filled. The project is hosted by the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Munich for a period of 25 years from 2013. It is supervised by Prof. Dr. Dag Nikolaus Hasse (University of Würzburg) and carried out by a core team of five scholars, including two research leaders (Dr. David Juste and Dr. Benno van Dalen), two post-doctoral researchers (currently Dr. María José Parra Pérez and Dr. Henry Zepeda) and one doctoral student (currently Bojidar Dimitrov).

We welcome applications for visiting fellowships tenable in Munich for a period of one to four months between 1 January and 30 November 2016. The next round of visiting fellowships is planned for 2018.

The project is hosted by the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Munich for a period of 25 years from 2013. The new Academy project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities intends to appoint on a regular basis up to three

Studentische Hilfskräfte,

who will be paid the regular fees for Hilfskräfte (10-19 hours/week). The tasks of these Hilfskräfte will include, among others, bibliographical research, book ordering, research in manuscript catalogues at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, internet search on manuscript collections in libraries around the world, ordering reproductions of manuscripts, assistance to the non-German-speaking members of the research team with administrative matters, etc.

The following skills are not by all means required, but would be very helpful in carrying out the tasks: good account of German, rather good account of English, reading skills in Arabic or Latin, experience with the standard Office programs.
