Currently available positions

Studentische or wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft with advanced knowledge of Arabic

The 25-year project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the University of Würzburg appoints on a regular basis three or four studen­tische or wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte who are paid the regular fees for Hilfskräfte (up to a maximum of 87 hours per month).

The tasks of the Hilfskräfte working for the Arabic section include, among others,

  • transcription of Arabic texts (also from manuscripts),
  • collaborative work on descriptions of Arabic Ptolemaic manuscripts,
  • bibliographical searches, especially also for manuscript catalogues,
  • research in manuscript catalogues at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek,
  • internet search for manuscript collections in libraries around the world,
  • inspection of Arabic manuscripts of which reproductions have been obtained and compilation of tables of contents of these manuscripts,
  • updating the project’s database of secondary literature,
  • scanning of relevant secondary literature,
  • assistance to the non-German-speaking members of the research team in administrative matters, etc.


The following skills are highly desirable:

  • reading skills in Arabic,
  • interest to do scholarly work, especially on medieval Arabic manuscripts
  • good account of English,
  • good account of German,
  • experience with the most common Office programs.

Current vacancy

Starting on 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, we are looking to appoint a Hilfskraft with a good knowledge of Arabic for 40 to 80 hours per month. This Hilfskraft will work in particular with the other Arabists in the project in order to prepare descriptions of Arabic Ptolemaic manuscripts, to collect manuscript catalogues of libraries around the world and to inspect these catalogues for manuscripts containing works by or related to Ptolemy (cf. the tasks mentioned above). Advanced reading skills of Arabic are therefore essential.
